2024 - 2025 Scholarships

CFYHA Scholarships

CFYHA is excited to announce scholarship opportunities for the 2024-2025 hockey season. These scholarship opportunities reflect all of the wonderful characteristics our players encompass, including academic/merit scholarships, leadership skills, and perseverance. The CFYHA Scholarship Committee will also be accepting applications for need based scholarships as well.

 

Criteria

  • Scholarship opportunities are open to all Cape Fear families.
  • Scholarship applications will need to be completed as one per player. 
  • Scholarship funds awarded will either be applied directly to the players CFYHA account to settle any outstanding balances (to include uniforms) or funds will be awarded by check.
  • One scholarship per player will be awarded.
  • Applications will be submitted via email to treasurer@capefearhockey.com

We would like to post a photo and profile of each recipient upon acceptance of the scholarship. The submitted application is considered your consent for photo release should your player be awarded a scholarship. 

Applicants must be in good financial standing with CFYHA.

Although we would like these scholarships to be an annual occurrence, CFYHA is a non-profit organization. Funds are derived from grants, fundraisers and banking rewards. Therefore scholarships will be awarded annually as funds allow. 

 

Important Dates

Applications will be accepted beginning November 6th and end at 11:59 on December 1st, 2024.

Scholarships will be announced no later than December 8th with funds awarded at a practice within 1 week of the announcement.  

Follow up letters from players who received scholarships will be due by January 15th, 2025.

John Dunbar Fallen Soldier Scholarship

Award: $1,000

Recipients: 1 per organization

Eligibility: Active duty, retired, or veteran military parent

Overview: Master Sergeant Jonathan J. Dunbar was a special operations soldier killed in action on March 30th, 2018. Born in Minnesota, Jon learned to play hockey at a young age and developed a love of the game. Even after joining the military, Jon continued to play hockey here at Cleland Ice Rink. Jon is remembered as a dedicated husband, father, friend, and soldier. The Jon Dunbar Fallen Soldier Scholarship will be awarded to a military child who displays not only a love of the game, but other characteristics Jon embodied as well -  leadership, drive, and teamwork, both on and off the ice.

Requirement: Active duty, retired, or veteran military families. Statement from player expressing their love for the game, leadership traits they possess, and what this scholarship would mean to them. Letter of support from coach or teacher.

Blue Line Girls Scholarship

Award: $500

Recipients: 1 per organization

Eligibility: Female players

Overview: The Blue Line Girls Scholarship will be awarded to a female player who demonstrates a passion for hockey and growing this amazing sport with other female athletes. This player will possess leadership skills both on and off the ice, have an overall love of the sport, and the passion to continue this sport in the years to come.

Requirement: The players statement will reflect the importance of growing girls' participation in the sport of hockey, and what hockey means to them.

Shutout Goalie Scholarship

Award: $500

Recipients: 2 per organization

Eligibility: 10U and above

Overview: The Shutout Goalie Scholarship will be awarded to 2 goalies ages 10U and above. The goal of the scholarship is to assist players with funding for goalie equipment, camps, or tuition. The player will be a dedicated goalie at CFYHA, and be focused on continued goalie player development.

Requirement: The players statement will reflect their dedication and passion to the goalie position.

Academic/Leadership Scholarship

Award: $250

Recipients: 4 per organization; 1 in each age group (8U, 10U, 12U, 14U)

Eligibility: Academic excellence

Overview: This merit based scholarship is offered to any player in the CFYHA organization. This player will have excelled academically, and demonstrated achievements in leadership, both at school and on the ice.

Requirement: Quarterly report from the 2024-2025 academic school year. Recommendation letter from a school teacher or official. The player's statement should include their commitment to both academics and hockey.

Coaching Scholarship

Nominated by players and members of the association

Award: $250

Recipients: 1 per organization

Overview: The coaching scholarship will be awarded to a coach who has demonstrated positive coaching responsibilities, leadership skills, respect for the players and the game, and a clear role model for all of the athletes.

Requirements: Statement from player or family on why this coach should receive the coaching scholarship and the impact this coach had on your player or family.

All in It Together

Needs based scholarship

Award: Various amounts up to 30% of registration fee

Recipients: Multiple per organization

Overview: Hockey can be an expensive enterprise. As an acknowledgment of this, we are offering scholarships to supplement player registrations (up to 30% of total registration fee) in all groups based on financial need. This is a confidential scholarship, names of recipients will not be disclosed.

Requirements: Statement of need from the parent; statement from player regarding what hockey means to them; proof of income may be requested to help with determination dependent on number of applications received.
