2022-23 Learn to Play Sessions

When is the best time to start learning hockey? Now! Our Learn to Play program develops skating skills, stick and puck handling, and hockey basics. We follow the American Development Model; a hockey model designed by USA Hockey for successfully developing hockey players. Cape Fear uses this nationwide model to produce skilled players – our love of the game is a bonus that we pass along as well.

*This is the perfect program for new hockey players or players who have started with a Learn to Skate or Learn to Play program.

*Players registering for Learn to Play must have basic skating skills and can stand and maneuver on the ice without assistance. For players without skating experience, we highly recommend a Learn to Skate program first. These can be registered for directly at the front office at Cleland Ice Rink and are run by Airborne Ice Skating.

Cape Fear Hockey’s 8U recreational program is designed for players who are new to the game, prefer to play only locally, or are just happy with the recreational level play.

The emphasis in recreational hockey is on skill development, primarily skating skills. Players will improve their skating, learn hockey concepts, learn the rules of the game, and learn how to be a part of a team in a noncompetitive setting. The goal of the recreational program is to lay foundations for future acquisitions of more advanced skills. The focus is on the fundamentals of basic skating and puck control. We hope to instill a love for the game in a FUN and challenging environment.

There are no tryouts for this program, anyone can register, but there are additional practices and opportunities to compete as a team.

8U developmental hockey includes two practices per week with an internal scrimmage on the weekends, and opportunities to travel and compete in mite jamborees within the Carolinas Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA).

For the 2022-23 season, CFYHA will hold its 8U developmental hockey programs for players ages 5 to 8, birth years 2017-2014. Players in this program should have some hockey experience. 2022-23 10/12/14U Recreational Hockey Programs

Cape Fear Hockey’s 10-14U recreational program is designed for players who are new to the game, not playing at the travel level yet, don't have the time to commit to travel, or are just happy with the recreational level play.

The emphasis in recreational hockey is on skill development, primarily skating skills. Players will improve their skating, learn hockey concepts, learn the rules of the game, and learn how to be a part of a team in a noncompetitive setting. Travel is limited (no overnight trips) and games will be a combination of internal scrimmages and noncompetitive games with other developmental programs in the region. The goal of the recreational program is to prepare players for the next level of hockey. We hope to instill a love for the game in a FUN and challenging environment.

Recreational hockey includes two practices a week and recreational games on weekends. Games will consist of a combination of internal scrimmages and noncompetitive games with other recreational level programs typically starting a few months into the season to give time for skills to be established and knowledge of the rules are understood.

For the 2022-23 season, CFYHA will hold recreational hockey programs for players ages 9-14, birth years 2008-2013. Players in these programs should have some skating experience. Full hockey gear is required.

2022-23 10/12/14U Travel Teams

We. Are. Warriors. At Cape Fear our Travel Program is designed around dedication, teamwork, and accountability. Our Warriors are dedicated to the success of their teams, to their classrooms, and to themselves. It is important to us that the players develop off the ice as well as on it. Players will be required to prove their dedication inside and outside the rink through academic progress reports, community service, and in-season evaluations. We will push our players to be better each day than the day before. These Warriors work as a team. Our program focuses on making sure every Warrior, past and present works harder for their team than themselves. Teamwork is a vital part of our everyday lives and we want to ensure that the kids learn how to be great teammates in all their future endeavors. Lastly, as Warriors, we need to be accountable. We're accountable to ourselves, our coaches, and our teammates. We're not only creating the next generation of hockey talent, we're creating the future leaders and citizens of our communities. Each player has a responsibility to themselves and their team to be the best they can at all times and leave it all on the ice. Until the Last Whistle, We Are Warriors!

Cape Fear Warriors are a part of the Carolina Hockey League (CHL). All travel teams will play a full CHL season as well as many exhibition games. Teams will play approximately 30 games per season and are guaranteed two tournament opportunities. Travel locations may include Roanoke, VA; Lynchburg, VA, Charleston, SC; Columbia, SC; Charlotte, NC; Wilmington, NC; and Raleigh, NC. In addition to games, each team will have two 1.5 hour on ice practice sessions per week. Teams will also conduct strength, conditioning, and film/chalk talk sessions weekly to prepare for upcoming games. It is our mission to have the most prepared and disciplined teams in the CHL.

The Warriors’ travel team evaluations take place in May each year. Due to the transient nature of the military community in which we reside, we allow for players new to the community to be evaluated at later dates. A second evaluation will take place on August 6, 2022, for the 2022-2023 season. Our goal is to remove barriers to playing hockey including if you are new to the community and have missed the traditional tryout windows for competitive hockey.

10/12/14U Travel players who completed an evaluation will be contacted by head coaches directly with instructions to register if they have been offered a spot on a travel team.

  • Travel: $2,200 + uniform: home and away jerseys with matching socks, warm-up jacket, red helmet, and red glovesA payment plan for this program is available when you register, please contact our registrar for more information.

  • Players who newly PCS'd or recently moved into the area who would still like to be considered for a travel team may email our Travel Hockey Coordinator, Jason Burgess, to discuss a potential evaluation. He can be contacted at: travelhockeycoordinator@capefearhockey.com
