Sarah and her team-mates on the Carolina Junior Hurricanes Tier 2 Girls 16U Team have made it to the USA National Tournament on April 5th in Massachusetts
Good Evening Folks
Sarah and her team-mates on the Carolina Junior Hurricanes Tier 2 Girls 16U Team have made it to the USA National Tournament on April 5th in Massachusetts . They did this by winning the South Eastern United States Title last week end in Ashburn, Virginia. This has been an exciting adventure and they have traveled from NC to Tampa, Florida, Buffalo, New York, Detroit Michigan and many States in between. They have played Triple A Teams from the US and Canada and been humbled by some of the best women players in both Countries. Early in the season many had wondered why they would even play against Teams at this level even when they had kept the games close rarely allowing the other teams a shut out. The Girls learned about adversity and rising to the challenge early in the Season. This was the first year all of these Girls had played together and they are a small team with girls traveling from Georgia, Charlotte, Greenville, Fort Bragg, and Chapel Hill for long week end practices in Wake Forest and Raleigh, NC. These girls have given up week ends for practices and games (even Friday night practices) for the love of the sport and their sisters. The girls often have to leave school on Thursdays return on Tuesday and all still maintaining high GPA's in hopes of some day playing in College. There are currently no Homeless parents but I am not sure how many may have incurred second mortgages due to Hockey. So the Team is asking for anyone that might have an extra dollar in the cookie jar this month and have a soft spot in their heart to contribute to these Girls exciting quest to be National Champs. They have succeeded in taking Girls Hockey in North Carolina as well as the Southeast Region to the next highest level and who knows you may see some of them in 4 years at our next Olympics.
PS I remember telling Sarah when she was very young she could do anything Boys could do if she worked hard, I just didn't know how expensive it would be. All monies raised will be split equally by the 15 families for travel expenses.
PPS Please pass this onto any rich neighbors or just anyone who loves the game of Hockey and loves pulling for the underdog.
PPPS Sarah Frances Von Canon started at Cape Fear Youth Hockey in Fort Bragg and we are working hard to grow the Girls program at Bragg and maybe having a Championship Team here some day.
